"It was done to me in turn; I assure you, I'm a man of reason but I haven't gone around testing it until now."

He gestures at the shelves.

"You were here. You belong here. In a way I'm doing what I'm supposed to, as a servant."

"I'd bet you're the only one who'll see it that way," she responds, the edges wearing off her prickliness as she realizes the truth to that statement. "Thanks for the wake up, but they're your responsibility, not me." She nods to the books at her feet.

"Although," she continues slowly, as a thought hits her, "if you have seen me around somewhere, some directions would be nice." When she concentrates, she can tell that her other self is closed, at least, and no more damaged than this body. But even if she remembered which shelf she'd shoved the book into as the vines crept in, something's changed. The pressure's on her sides is gone; she's no longer upright.
